Amundson, TNT try to bounce back against Phoenix

Louis Amundson certainly must perform better Sunday if he were to stay longer in his stint as TNT KaTropa import.

Another TNT prospect Donte Greene will be around as Amundson plays his second game with the Ka Tropa versus the Phoenix Fuel Masters in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.

Amundson, a 10-year NBA veteran, debuted in the local pro league with 19 points and 18 rebounds – an effort not enough to help TNT stop the Meralco charge.

Their game against Phoenix could well be his last chance to extend his tour of duty with the Ka Tropa.

The Fuel Masters and new import Jameel McKay, meanwhile, hope to put things together after a 19-point rout by the Star Hotshots Wednesday.

McKay put in decent stuffs in his PBA debut but didn’t get the needed support from his local teammates in their 82-101 blowout loss to the Hotshots.

Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia particularly called the attention of their backcourt players in yet another embarrassing defeat at the hands of Star this season.

“Their guards are much better than my guards. I think it’s hard to win when we shot 2-of-25 [from the three-point area],” said Vanguardia. “It’s like every time we play Star, they’re just attacking our guards. We’ve gotta learn how to play teams with better guards. They will just attack our guards so our guards really need to step up.”

Vanguardia hopes to get some relief on the return of Gilas Pilipinas hopeful Matthew Wright.

Wright is to play his first game after undergoing a minor surgery right after their elimination in the Philippine Cup.

Going to the 6:45 p.m. game, the Fuel Masters are at 1-1, having won their conference debut against the Blackwater Elite largely behind fill-in import Eugene Phelps’ 53 points and 21 rebounds against Greg Smith’s 37 markers and 30 boards.
