After the piece on Flagrant Fouls Penalty 2, we now give you the infractions or offenses that are classified under Flagrant Foul Penalty 1.
This is a lighter offense which does not merit an automatic suspension. A first offender on a team in a game gets to sit out 3 minutes after being called for a Flagrant Foul Penalty 1. Successive offenders will have to sit out 5 minutes.
Offenses classified as Flagrant Foul Penalty 1:
1. Undercutting an airborne shooter without contact.
2. An elbow which makes contact below shoulder level.
3. Fighting stance (ONLY) – no blows involved. Includes aggressively running after an opponent but NOT coming into contact with him;
4. If the opponent is after the man and not the ball (even just to stop play) – no dire consequence;
5. Tripping with contact;
6. Leaving a foot on the landing spot of a shooter (WITHOUT contact).
7. Hacking arm with closed fist – usually in defending against a shooter, dribbler or passer.
8. Other forms of illegal contact deemed flagrant and unnecessary by the game officials
